Lesson mini-games are used to raise an idol's stats as well as their tension and performance levels.

Vocal Lesson interface in THE iDOLM@STER arcade game

THE iDOLM@STER (Arcade)

The first lessons were played using a touchscreen on the arcade machine.

THE iDOLM@STER (Xbox 360)

Due to the lack of a touchscreen format for the Xbox 360, the controls were reworked to accustom a console gamepad. In each game, the player must complete certain tasks in 5 tries.

  • Voice: The player must press the correct button as a line passes over notes on a musical staff. A higher point bonus is awarded depending on how well-timed the button was pressed in relation to the bar's proximity to the center of the note. Raises Vocal and Dance stat.
  • Pose: The player must direct their idol to correctly look and pose into various cameras. A higher point bonus is awarded depending on how fast and precise the player directs their idol. Raises Visual and Dance stat.
  • Lyrics: The player must find an error in scrambled music lyrics. A higher point bonus is awarded depending on how fast the player solves the problem. Raises Vocal stat.
  • Dance: The player must input button presses at the correct time. A higher point bonus is awarded depending on how fast and correctly the player presses the buttons. Raises Dance stat.
  • Expression: The player must find the corresponding facial expression in a maze. A higher point bonus is awarded depending on how fast the player can get to the correct expression. Raises Visual stat.

THE iDOLM@STER SP

The controls are the exact same as the 360 version, with a few changes and a new minigame. Instead of 5 tries, the player is given 60 seconds to complete each lesson with an unlimited amount of tries. New background musics are also used, instead of instrumental versions of the available idol songs.

  • Dance: The player must input button and directional pad presses at the correct time. A higher point bonus is awarded depending on how fast and correctly the player presses the buttons. Raises Dance stat.
  • Expression: The player must pick out the colored text boxes matching the text box at the bottom of the screen. Raises Visual stat.
  • Performance: The player must bat speech balloons with a megaphone at blue boxes containing song lyrics. Batting word balloons at red boxes will result in a miss and deduct from the lesson. A higher point bonus is awarded for highlighting all boxes quickly and precisely. Raises Vocal and Visual.

  • Dance:In this lesson, the player is shown a number of circular step panels with different colors on the touch screen and a horizontal bar. Smaller step panels, similar to the larger, static ones, will start to move from right to left over the bar. As soon as a step panel overlaps with the circle-shaped frame at the left end of the bar, the player must touch the corresponding step panel with the stylus. This process is repeated six times. For each time, a rank, displayed on the upper screen, is awarded based on the player's accuracy. If the player taps the wrong step panel, a BAD grade will be awarded instead of a rank. The lesson's final outcome is based on the ranks received.
  • Visual:The visual lessons are similar to the expression lesson (表現力レッスン) in the original arcade version of THE iDOLM@STER. A line from one of the game's songs is shown in a certain color, and the player's task is to collect all expression panels of the same color by touching them. The expression panels, round panels depicting a face, move around on the touch screen. Among them are also panels of different colors, which must not be touched. Like the vocal lesson, this lesson consists of six parts, each of which must be finished within a time limit. For each part, a rank, displayed on the upper screen, is awarded based on the player's speed. If the player fails by running out of time a BAD grade will be awarded instead of a rank. The lesson's final outcome is based on the ranks received.
  • Vocal: The vocal lessons in Dearly Stars can be compared to the lyrics lesson (歌詞レッスン) in previous installments. The player is shown a line from the lyrics of one of the game's songs on the touch screen, written entirely in hiragana. After a few seconds, the line disappears and then reappears with a number of gaps. The player must complete the line within the time limit by selecting the correct letter blocks from the panel on the left side of the screen by touching them and then tapping the right gap to drop them in it. This process is repeated six times. For each time, a rank, displayed on the upper screen, is awarded based on the player's speed. If time runs out before the line is completed, a BAD grade will be awarded instead of a rank. The lesson's final outcome is based on the ranks received. The interface of the Vocal Lesson seems to be based on Mojipittan, a word puzzle game by NBGI.

THE iDOLM@STER 2

The minigames here are reworked from the old minigames to introduce variety.

  • Dance: The player must press the Left and Right Bumpers to the tempo.
  • Visual: The player must pick out the colored text boxes matching the text box at the bottom of the screen. The lesson is wholly identical to the Expression lesson from Idolmaster SP.
  • Vocal: The player must press the correct button as it moves along a music bar.
  • Training From Hell: If the idol team's stats dip below exceptional, the game will force the team to undertake training which will greatly raise all stats. The player must force the idols to run a great distance in time with each other while pacing themselves.

THE iDOLM@STER ONE FOR ALL

ONE FOR ALL introduces three minigames for Lessons.

  • Dance: Boxes appear around the screen, and an arrow sequence appears before players have to press the buttons in-time with the beat. This is much like the iM@S 2 dance lesson.
  • Visual: On either side of the screen, commands for camera and facial expressions appear, connected to a button press. Players have to press both the camera and expression buttons before the shadow giving that command fills up red. It is much like the "Pose" lesson in previous games.
  • Vocal: Notes fly from the right into the marker. Players hold each note for the length of the note. The breath meter will empty over time, so players must press L1 or R1 to refill it. It is much like the "Voice" lesson in previous games.
